| Pope Takes VanAernam Memorial Victory
By: Joseph Achzet - glenridgepr@cottontaildesign.com Fultonville, NY - Bob VanAernam was a long time street stock competitor and benefactor to the division through his family business, Harry's Auto. The racing community lost Bob on May 7th, 2005 after he suffered a heart attack while doing what he enjoyed, racing. Since then, his son Rob and the business have continued on, holding a race in his honor. Friday night, was that race. With Harry's Auto, Andy's Service Center, and Snap-On Tools contributing to the street stock purse. A pay-day of $550 was on the line for the Street Stocks. Randy Cosselman and Darrel Older would lead the field to the green flag with Cosselman jumping out to the early lead. Street hot shoe Dave Pope invaded Glen Ridge looking to claim the prize money and was on the charge making his way towards the front with street stock points leader Dave Bayes in tow. As the pair battled through traffic it would be Pope who made it to the front first, getting by Cosselman for the top spot. Bayes would quickly move into the second spot giving chase. Brian Cosselman, fresh off a 2nd place performance 2 weeks ago would be on the move as he would make his way to third in the late stages of the race. A caution would bunch the field for a final dash to the finish, but Pope would not be turned away, claiming the 30 lap feature victory. Bayes was second followed by Cosselman, Chuck McSpirit and John Bradt. Tim Mayne and Jamike Sowle would lead the modified field to the green flag for their feature with Mayne quickly taking the top spot. Jeff Brownell Jr would be on the charge looking to claim his second victory of the year when he would get crossed up in turn 3, collecting up the 23p of Richie Price and his brother, Billy Price, and his number 72 machine. All would continue on. Craig Hanson would quickly make his way to second trying to find the way past Mayne for the top spot. Mayne would make a small bobble in turn 2 allowing the 2nd generation driver past. That would be all Hanson would need as he drove away unchallenged to the victory. Mayne would hold on to a hard fought second place finish followed by Sowle, Brownell, and Randy Hotaling. Chris McCoy and Kory Wilder would lead the Budget Sportsman to the line with McCoy jumping out to the early lead. The Middleburgh, NY rookie campaigner would hold the top spot until Joe Ketchum would slip underneath him off turn 2 to take the lead. Ketchum would survive a flurry of late race caution staying firm at the point. A final caution for Alex Alberti would set up a 1 lap dash to the finish. Jeremiah Munson would take a run at the Gloversville, NY pilot, but would settle for second as Ketchum would take his first career Glen Ridge victory. Munson would be second followed by Angela Hoard, Wilder, and Steve Douglas. In the Cruisers, Bobby Rhinehardt would make his way to the front early slipping past Pat McSpirit to take the top spot. Several cautions would slow the event, with each caution bringing the field back to Rhinehardt. Kerry Hollenbeck started behind Rhinehardt and quickly made his way to the second spot behind Rhinehardt. Using the restarts to his advantage Hollenbeck would take over the top spot. Rhinehardt would get one final chance on a late race yellow, but Hollenbeck would hold on for his 4th victory of the year. Rhinehardt would be second followed by Bruce Liddle, Pat McSpirit, and Chris Andrew. The 2008 season continues next Friday, May 16nd, with a regular show. Gates open at 5pm with racing scheduled for 7:30pm. For more information visit the Glen Ridge web site at http://www.thenewglenridgemotorsportspark.com. |
